Today In …

1865 - The Sultana exploded and sank in the waters of the Mississippi River, killing around 1,500 people, mostly former Union P.O.W.s.

2005 - Today marked the maiden flight of the Airbus A380 “Superjumbo” Jet. The flight took place in Toulouse, France.

2006 - Construction officially began on New York City’s Freedom Tower at the site of the World Trade Center.

Judy Carne from TV’s “Rowan & Martin’s Laugh In” and former wife of Burt Reynolds was born in 1939.

Sheena Easton the singer of such hits as “Morning Train” and “We’ve Got Tonight” was born in 1959.

Ace Frehley the legendary guitarist for the rock band KISS was born in 1951.

Ulysses S. Grant the 18th President of the United States and leader of the Union forces in the Civil War was born in 1822.

Coretta Scott King the Civil Rights activist and wife of Martin Luther King Jr. was born in 1927.

Casey Kasem the infamous disc jockey/radio personality and voice of Shaggy from TV’s animated “Scooby Doo: Where Are You?” was born in 1932.

Jack Klugman who starred on TV’s “The Odd Couple” and “Quincy” was born in 1922.

Walter Lantz who created the cartoon character Woody Woodpecker was born in 1900. His wife, Gracie, would be the voice behind the character.

Samuel B. Morse who developed the Morse code was born in 1791.

Kate Pierson a member of music’s The B-52s, was born in 1948.

Ralph Waldo Emerson the famed author/essayist passed away in 1882 at the age of 78.

Ruth Handler one of the founders of Mattel and inventor of Barbie passed away in 2002 at the age of 85.

Ferdinand Magellan the famed explorer was killed in 1521 at the age of 41.

Edward R. Murrow the renowned journalist/reporter passed away in 1965 at the age of 57.

Zebulon Pike the legendary explorer/frontiersman who discovered the area that would later be named after him, Pike’s Peak, was killed in action in 1813 at the age of 34.
