Narnia - The Wardrobe's History

The Pevensie children are staying with Professor Kirke to escape the deadly blitzes on London, England.
As the children explore the old house by going into and out of various rooms they see several different pieces of furniture. One piece that looks quite ordinary is a wardrobe – at this time and in this place people do not have built in closets to keep their clothes in. Wardrobes are separate pieces of furniture – made of wood and they can be quite plain or very ornate.

In this story, the wardrobe is quite remarkable in that it is made from some rather amazing wood. The Wardrobe is made from the wood of the apple tree planted by Digory Kirke. The seeds are from the apple which he gets in The Magician’s Nephew. The tree grows straight and strong for many years. Unfortunately, the tree is blown down during a terrible wind storm.

Rather than just burn the wood in the fire it seems that something more important should be done with such wood from an interesting history. Digory decides to make something with the wood, and thus he has the wardrobe crafted from this wood. . The wardrobe later becomes the portal the Pevensie siblings use to gain entrance to Narnia in The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe.
Sometimes the wardrobe has a solid back and sometimes it becomes a portal to Narnia. For example, it is solid when Lucy Pevensie tries to prove the truth of her visit to Narnia. At other times, it is not! As time passes the children are able to use it to travel back and forth to Narnia. When they pass through the back of the wardrobe that arrive near the iron lamppost in Narnia.

The wardrobe stands in an unused bedroom in Professor Digory Kirke’s country house. This is the house that his parents inherit in The Magician’s Nephew. At first glance it is just a wardrobe full of old coats, when it is not a portal to Narnia, it appears to only contain old fur coats. These become quite useful when the children need something to wear in the cold winter weather..
