1761 - America’s first life insurance policy was issued today by The Corporation for the Relief of Poor and Distressed Presbyterian Ministers and of the Poor and Distressed Widows and Children of Presbyterian Ministers.

1843 - Thousands of settlers began their trek on what would become known as the Oregon Trail.

1906 - The Wright Brothers received a patent for what was to become known as the airplane!

1955 - After over 20 years on the air, Jack Benny signed off for the final time from his radio show.

1961 - The first revolving restaurant atop the Space Needle in Seattle, Washington was dedicated today!

1972 - President Richard M. Nixon became the first U.S. leader to visit Moscow.

2002 - The remains of missing intern Chandra Levy were discovered in Washington D.C. over a year after her disappearance.

Bernie Taupin the long time songwriting partner of Elton John was born in 1950. He helped to pen such notable tunes as “Bennie & the Jets” and “Crocodile Rock”.

Richard Wagner the German composer was born in 1813.

Paul Winfield who starred in the movie “Sounder” was born in 1939.

Langston Hughes the renowned poet passed away in 1967 at the age of 65.

Victor Hugo the author of “Les Miserables” and “The Hunchback of Notre Dame” passed away in 1885 at the age of 83.

Royce Kendall one half of the father-daughter country music duo The Kendalls passed away in 1998 at the age of 63.

Thurl Ravenscroft the voice of Tony The Tiger and the singer of “You’re A Mean One, Mr. Grinch” in the animated holiday classic “How the Grinch Stole Christmas” passed away in 2005 at the age of 91.

Margaret Rutherford the actress best remembered as “Miss Marple” passed away in 1972 at the age of 80.

Martha Washington the former First Lady and wife of the 1st U.S. President George Washington passed way in 1802 at the age of 70.
