971 Bishop Swithin's remains were transferred to Winchester Cathedral on this day. It began raining very hard and it was thought at the time that his spirit was angry about the move and caused the rain. A superstition soon followed that, if it rained on July 15th, it would rain for 40 days. "St. Swithin’s day, gif ye do rain, for forty days it will remain; St. Swithin’s day, an ye be fair, for forty days ’twill rain nae mair."
