Michael Clarke Duncan

“My name is John Coffey.”
“Coffey?”
“Yes sir boss. Sounds like the drink but spelt diff’rent.”
If anyone has ever watched the movie The Green Mile, they would know that line is from Michael Clarke Duncan’s character as death row inmate John Coffey. Although he has had a plethora of minor roles and supporting roles throughout his short lived career, Duncan will probably be best known for that one.

Sadly, it was this day in history in 2012, that Michael Clarke Duncan had succumbed to complications of a heart attack. His girlfriend and infamous Celebrity Apprentice co- star Omarossa, was with him when he had his heart attack and used CPR to try and revive him before the ambulance arrived to take him to the hospital.

Duncan was born in 1957 in Chicago, Illinois and was raised in a single household along with his sister by their mother, after their father left. He was raised poor but managed to go to school at Alcorn State College for a short time. He played basketball there and was enrolled in the Communications program as he had wanted to become an actor. However, that dream would have to wait as he had to leave college and support the family when his mother fell ill. He took a job digging ditches and also worked as a bouncer in several clubs. His 6‘5’, 315 pound frame surely made him an opposing figure. Later on, Duncan would get jobs as bodyguards for the likes of Will Smith and rapper Notorious B.I.G. When B.I.G. was murdered in 1997, Duncan stopped being a bodyguard. It was these connections though that got him a role alongside Bruce Willis and Ben Affleck in the movie Armageddon, as the character named Bear.

He later co-starred in another movie with Bruce Willis called The Whole Nine Yards and would also co-star with Ben Affleck again in the movie Daredevil as Daredevil’s arch nemesis, the Kingpin. Duncan also played alongside the Rock in the movie The Scorpion King.

Michael Clarke Duncan was a fine actor with a deep baritone voice and an imposing figure and died much too early at the age of 54.
