Our Stories Remember by Joseph Bruchac

This book, which involves a multitude of Native American groups, introduces us to the history, culture and values of the Indian people with various topics and divisions within the chapters to guide us in this journey.

The book is divided into several sections: "Introduction: connections", "The Road of Stories", "Who Are We?", "Origins", "Spirit: Life and Death", "Tricksters Turn", "Contact: The Coming of Weapons", "Generations: Parent, Grandparents, Children", "All is Living Around Us: Animal, People and Plants", "Epilogue: The Drum is the Heartbeat", and "Sources and Others Versions of the Stories".

Joseph Bruchac has had many years of teaching from tribal elders, teachers and friends who come from a range of Native American Nations of which many are featured in this book. He shares with us many different views of life and culture from beginning to end using various different traditional stories and history. The journey is one of adventure into culture and learning and he brings it all together in this book.

The author also offers pages throughout the book on the importance of various topics to the Native American people such as: Timeline: Development of Native American Art in North America, Ceremony, Indians and Art, Reservations, Sign Language, Corn, Indian Boarding Schools, Tobacco and Deer.

I loved this book.. one story in particular struck me called "Half a Blanket" from the Mohawk people which very well symbolized the circle of life and that we should remember that in what we do in life. Throughout the book the author also points us to recommended reading for further study. This book has many wise stories and information and I would definitely recommend it for anyone interested in learning more of the culture of the American Indian people.
