Chanukah Crafts
Guest Author - Diane Claus

Chanukah is celebrated for eight days. Chanukah celebrates an event that took place well over 2,000 years ago. After driving out Antiochus, the Syrian king, the Maccabee’s wanted to rededicate the temple but they found only enough oil to last one. The oil lasted for 8 days, which was enough time to make new oil.

Hanukiyah
(Chanukah menorah)

Shamash – in the center and sits higher and is lit first it is then used to light the other candles.

Candles are placed right to left and lit from left to right

You will need:
-8 empty toilet paper rolls
-One empty paper towel roll
-Red cellophane
-Yellow cellophane
-Orange cellophane
-Tape
-Wrapping paper or construction paper
-Yellow electrical tape

First you are going to want to cut the paper towel roll down so it is about one inch taller then the toilet paper rolls. Next, cover each toilet paper and paper towl roll with either wrapping paper or construction paper. I like wrapping paper because of the wide varities of color abd styles available, but either wil work. If you use construction paper decorate with makers and crayons.

When you are finished decorating line them up in a row with the paper towel roll in the center and carefully wrap the elecetrical tape around the bottom. I added a small piece of tape on the bottom to secure them to the oe next to it, you do not have to.

To create the flame cut out a piece of the red, yellow and orange cellophane that is about two inches squared. Don’t worry if it is not square or exactly two inches because it will look fine you can even make the edges jagged to give it a more life like appearance. Take one corner and gather it together and tape to hold it together. Spread out and crinkle the top of the cellophane so that it resembles a flame. Insert the flame in the tope of the toilet paper roll and you are finished.

Candle Holder

Ages 9 and up
You will need:
-Tin Can
-Nail
-Hammer
-Water and a freezer
-Paint

Remove label, wash the can and allow to dry.
Fill the can with water and put in the freeze over night.
Using the hammer and nail punch one hole for each of the 6 corners of the Star of David. Then punch a second set of holes half an inch from the first holes. The picture to the right gives a good visual. Click on it and you will be taken to PDF template to use. The template is designed for use on a standard soup/vegetable can.

Once done allow the ice to melt and drain the water and allow to dry. You can paint with acrylic paint.

Children should not be left unsupervised around an open flame.
