Tile Coasters Made Easy

Guest Author - Angelica Arroyo

Each Christmas, everyone in my workplace sets out stockings so we can share with each other small gifts to show we care. Working in a location with over 20 employees, each year I am challenged to find a gift that is cost-effective but also creative and special. This past Christmas, I enlisted the help of my sister-in-law to make bathroom tile coasters. Each of my coworkers received a coaster with their first initial made with scrapbooking paper. Follow these simple directions to make personalized coasters that you and the children can enjoy making together.

You will need:

4x4 inch white ceramic tile
Paint
Felt
Glue
Acrylic sealer spray

Begin by washing and thoroughly drying your ceramic tile. You will want a smooth clean surface to paint on. You will be able to find white ceramic tiles at any home-improvement store for under $.50! You may also be pleasantly surprised and tempted to see tiles in all different colors and textures. However, the plain white tile will work best for decorating. Get four ceramic tiles to make a nice coaster gift set.

Using the paint colors of choice, have your child decorate the tile anyway they would like. Here are some ideas: Do an infant footprint on the tile to make a nice gift for grandparents. Allow your child to paint using sponges, paintbrushes, or other tools to vary the look. Whatever paint design you choose, allow it to dry completely before moving on to the next step.

You will want to seal and protect the paint design. Use an acrylic spray or Mod Podge, or any sealant that is heat and water resistant. This step is safely and best done by an adult. Be sure to follow the directions on your sealant. Some sealants require two coats. Some require 12 hours of dry time. It is important to follow the steps on the sealant perfectly so the coaster will withstand heat from a hot coffee cup and condensation from a cold drink.

The final step is to cut the felt in a 4 x 4 inch square and use the glue to affix the felt to the bottom of the tile. Another option to use on the bottom of the tile is corkboard. Now you can place the coaster on any surface and not worry about the tile scratching the tabletop.

If you decided to make a coaster gift set, you can stack the coasters and use decorative material and a ribbon to wrap it up.

Don't forget to make yourself coaster to celebrate a job well done!
