Pinot Noir - The Heartbreak Grape
Guest Author - Paula S.W. Laurita

This light, red wine is perfect for pairing with many types of dishes.

Pinot Noir is lighter in color and body than Cabernet Sauvignon or Merlot. The medium-to-high acidity and medium-to-low tannnins make this a friendly red wine. It also makes it a great partner to pork, duck, goose, and other heavier fowl.

Pinot Noir originated in Burgundy, France. The great Burgundies come from 100% Pinot Noir grapes. In the US, Oregon has become the leader in Pinot Noir.

Pinot Noir has been described as the king of Oregon's varietals. Almost 40% of Oregon's wine acreage is planted with Pinot Noir. Oregon is in fact the United States' premier region for growing Pinot Noir. The climate is very similar to France's Burgundy region.

California also produces good Pinot Noirs, but until recently has been limited in production. The 2002 California Pinots promise a great selection, especially from the South Coast wineries. Many are available for about $10.

Pinot Noir is referred to as the "heart break grape." It is infamous for being difficult to grow and is easilty affected by climate and soil changes.

The Blackstone Monterey County Pinot Noir is a great bargain. It features the great black cherry flavors Pinot Noir is famous for. Included are flavors of strawberry jam and tea. The finish is pleasing, with just a touch of acidity.
