Cabernet Franc
Guest Author - Paula S.W. Laurita

Discover the parent grape of Cabernet Sauvignon.

Many, many years ago Cabernet Franc created, by the genetic marriage Sauvignon Blanc, Cabernet Saugignon. Cabernet France is a red wine grape that is often used in Bordeaux blends to add acidity and aroma.

Cabernet Franc is usually used as a minor (10%-15%) component in a blend with other varieties. Cabernet Franc wines are lighter and fruitier than it's offspring, Cabernet Sauvignon.

In St. Emilion, France, it is blended (60%-40%) with Merlot. These wines are renowned for their body and structure.

The Cabernet Franc grape is a sturdy grape that grows well in a variety of climates. It has been replacing Merlot in California and Oregon.

When drinking Cabernet Franc, look for flavors of raspberries, plums, or cherries. There will often been nice herbs and spices or leather flavors. These earthy flavors are echoed in the aromas. You can find nice examples of Cabernet Franc for under $20.
