Need an excuse to get up a little early and bake? The recipes in veteran food writer, Donna Leahy’s, book, Baking for Breakfast are exactly what dreams are made of. In fact, there are enough recipes in this book that look amazing (and the one’s that I’ve tried – taste amazing), that you’ll have an excuse to plan an entire brunch for a weekend or holiday and serve enough scrumptious baked goods to make dozens of family members and friends swoon. This is not a book full of mundane banana bread and blueberry muffin recipes; rather it's full of down-to-earth, yet innovative and unique baked goods that will make even non-bakers want to spend some time in the kitchen baking up treats.
One of the things a book of this caliber does is inspire cooks to learn something new. While there are dozens of recipes for scrumptious quick breads – muffins, scones, loaves, coffee cakes, crisps, crumbles, etc., there are also great, easy to follow recipes for real Danish pastries, croissants, strudels, and delights generally only found in high-end and European bakeries. Granted, they are a lot more work, but worth every bit of time spent.
The pictures of each recipe are beautiful, and there is a great table of contents and index. The author shows her personality in the vignettes and explanations that introduce each recipe, so when reading the book, it doesn’t feel like a laundry list. Since the recipes range from very easy to a bit more complicated, everyone, from beginners to seasoned bakers, will find something that they can bake perfectly.
For anyone who loves to bake, this book is highly recommended. It will inspire and give bakers reason to get up early and bake.
