Some cookbooks are made simply for cooking a few recipes; others, like Home Cooked: Essential Recipes for a New Way to Cook are made for cooking, reading, inspiration, and pure beauty. The author of this book, Anya Fernald, spent time in Italy, and Italian cooking has inspired many of the recipes. However, Fernald has presented easier and better ways to make these incredible dishes, and there are dozens that everyone will want to make.
No boring recipes here – unique dishes that are mouthwatering, with easy-to-follow instructions. Inspiring recipes include Cornmeal Spoonbread (made in a cast-iron pan), Olive Oil Poached Salmon, Fennel and Black-Pepper Crusted Pork Loin, and Beef Involtini with Ham and Provolone. There is a luscious Blood Orange Salad, a Squash and Farro Risotto, and a quick, easy, and delicious dish called Asparagus with Fried Eggs and Aioli. There are basic sauces – Fernald’s Salsa Verde and Chimichurri sauces are excellent – and hints on making and preserving so that important ingredients are always on hand.
The pictures are not just of the dishes; there are beautiful pictures of the author’s farm, as well as interesting people and places. The book is nice enough to use as a coffee-table book, and has enough pictures, recipes, stories, and information to curl up and read for hours.
Anyone who loves to cook delicious, beautiful, and somewhat healthy dishes with fresh ingredients will want to own a copy of this book. It will also make an excellent wedding or birthday gift for someone who loves to cook.
