Moose are among the most commonly seen large mammals in Alaska, by residents and visitors alike. Here are some of my own sightings.
This photo was taken on a late fall boating trip on the Noatak River. This young bull swam across the river, taking no notice of our boat.

This cow watched us quite calmly as we boated by. This was taken on the Kobuk River.

This cow and calf pair frequented our "backyard" in Chistochina quite frequently this past winter. They are standing on the frozen surface of Sinona Creek. The cow is wearing an old Alaska Department of Fish and Game collar. We have seen her off and on in the vicinity ever since we've lived here. The collar is no longer in use (the department uses smaller, less bulky collars nowadays), but game managers reportedly say it would cause the cow more trauma to remove it than to just leave it on and let her alone.

This is a closer view of the calf seen in the photo above. If you look closely, you can see a small knob right above his eye - he's getting ready to sprout his first set of antlers!
