Tick And Mosquito Warnings
Mosquitoes and ticks are more than an annoyance. They are pest that cause disease and illness. Certainly, the ill, kids, and elderly are more susceptible. Of course, the ultimate way to avoid mosquitoes and ticks is to stay inside, but there are other solutions to protect yourself from mosquito and tick bites. Pest control experts predict that this summer will see an abundance of the insects invading the country. This is due to the unseasonably warm weather that we experienced across most of the United States. The warmer than usual weather was a very inviting breeding ground and hatching ground for insect eggs. These pests carry a whole host of diseases. For example, Lyme Disease, Zika, and The West Nile Virus. New disease strains are developing all the time.
Natural Protective Measures Against Insects
Vinegar - This scent will make mosquitoes retreat. Take white vinegar and dab a bit on a cotton ball. Rub the cotton ball over exposed skin areas. Insects will definitely avoid anyone with a vinegar smell.
Garlic - Garlic is a wonderful bug repellent. Prefer not to eat garlic daily? Take garlic supplements.
Citronella Oil/Citronella Candles - Insects detest the aroma of the citronella candles or the citronella oil. Place citronella candles outdoors on your porch or deck. Burn the citronella candles any time you spot pesky insects.
Lemon/Eucalyptus Essential Oil - Dab a bit of the essential oil on exposed skin. These specific essential oils have natural insect repellent ability. Remember to use only the pure essential oils. Synthetic oils do not have the same ability to drive away the pesky bugs.
Clothing - Wear long sleeved shirts and long pants during the height of the summer season to avoid mosquito and tick bites.
Perfumes - Studies show that the mosquito is attracted to sweet perfumes, colognes, and lotions. Avoid mosquito bites by eliminating strong smelling perfumes, colognes, lotions, and body sprays.
Perspiration - The mosquito and tick are like heat seeking missiles. They are strongly attracted to high temperature bodies. Their heat sensing radar easily detects heat emanating from your body along with the strong chemical odors released by heavy sweating. Here is another way to reduce the chances of getting bitten. Just don't sweat. Stay cool. Sip a cool drink in the shade and take it easy.
Don't forget to remove any standing water around your house. This is a breeding ground for mosquitoes. Cut high hedges and mow the lawn. Ticks like to hide in the shrubbery and weeds. They leap on any warm bodied host that walks by. The bugs attach their body to the host and bite. That hosts might be you!
Note: Here is how to ease a bug bite. Dip a cotton ball in witch hazel and rub on the insect bite to relieve redness, swelling, and itching. Follow with hydrocortisone cream. Hyrocortisone cream is a topical, over the counter cream available at local drug stores that soothes insect bites too. If the insect bite is serious, consult your doctor.
