Although Vincent Price is most well-known for his acting roles in horror movies, he was, before his death in 1993, an accomplished gourmet cook. He even starred in an British television show in the 70s called Cooking Price-Wise. Hence, this cookbook, Cooking Price-Wise: A Culinary Legacy, which has been re-released. The new release includes dozens of fairly easy, recipes, many that regular cooks will want to make. Unfortunately, there are no photographs of the dishes.
The cookbook is full of recipes from all over the world and there are dozens that are truly mouthwatering. Shropshire Fidget Pie is delicious, and the title is fun. There are Greek Dolmades, Cornish Pasties, Tournedos Victor Hugo, and French Lyonnaise Potatoes. Price has also included an excellent recipe for a Moroccan Tagine made with lamb, and Provençal Bacon Casserole. Hawaiian Chicken and Long-Grain Rice is perfect for a luau, and there is a good recipe for a popular Indonesian dish, Nasi Goreng. There are also yummy desserts like Chocolate Hazelnut Gateau and Pineapple Custard Pudding.
Victoria Price, Vincent’s daughter, has added notes on her family recipes, as well as the Price culinary legacy. The book not only contains fabulous recipes, but also historical facts and vignettes. So, the cookbook is also good reading.
There are enough good recipes in this cookbook (and so far all that I have prepared have turned out perfectly) to keep cooks busy for a long time. Most of the recipes are fairly easy, and they are suitable for cooks at all levels of expertise. It’s also fun to delve into the life of a famous person, and find out just what they ate over the years. This book is recommended for anyone who is a fan of Vincent Price and anyone who enjoys a variety of great recipes.
