Everyone loves the March family from the classic book, Little Women by Louisa May Alcott. And anyone who is a foodie, most likely has wondered just what their favorite characters in the book would have eaten during both the good and bad times in the novel. The March family had their financial problems, and so most of the recipes in the Little Women Cookbook were easy on the budget, using foods that were most likely cheap during the later 1800s in New England, when Little Women was written (two volumes – one in 1868 and one in 1869). Wini Moranville, a noted food writer has captured the ambience of the time period while at the same time presenting easy, doable recipes that were most likely served by the Marches and their friends.

This cookbook is fun, since it has quotes from the original book, and readers can imagine their favorite characters living in that time and eating foods that were popular. Picnics were always something everyone loved, and the Roast Beef Picnic Sandwiches are delicious, as well as Amy’s Lemonade to go with them. Other dishes from the period, but that have been modernized, are Baked New England Cod (a new favorite), Apple Orchard Chicken, and Apple Slump. Because Hannah most likely immigrated from somewhere in the UK, some of the dishes like Hannah’s Cottage Pie and Fruit and Nut Trifle have English or British roots.

Although there aren’t pictures of every dish, there are mouthwatering photographs of many of the dishes featured in the book. And while there aren’t all that many recipes, the ones that are included are for dishes that most people will want to try and especially want to eat.

It’s no wonder that this delightful cookbook was a finalist by Good Reads for cookbook of the year in 2019. Owning the cookbook will inspire readers and cooks to go back and re-read the novel; it will be just as enjoyable, or maybe more so that reading it for the first time. Highly recommended.
