Anyone not familiar with food from the Dominican Republic will want to pick up an excellent cookbook by Vanessa Mota, The Dominican Kitchen: Homestyle Recipes That Celebrate the Flavors, Traditions, and Culture of the Dominican Republic. While the food is similar to Cuban, Puerto Rican, and other Latin food, this author shows the differences and presents absolutely mouthwatering dishes.
There is an introductory chapter with a list of ingredients, and explanations of how these ingredients are used in the Dominican kitchen. This chapter is well-written and isn’t too involved, so it can be read in a matter of minutes. The recipes are written in the traditional form with the ingredients listed first, followed by step-by-step instructions that are easy for anyone, whether a beginning cook or advanced cook, to understand and follow. Most of the ingredients listed can be purchased at mainstream grocery stores, with just a few that will need to be bought at a Latin market. Many of the recipes are very easy to put together, and have minimal ingredients, so most cooks can make them in a minimal amount of time.
One of the best parts of this cookbook is that almost all of the dishes are accompanied by beautiful, professional photographs so that anyone will know beforehand just what their dish should look like. All types of dishes are included: appetizers, soups, salads, main and side dishes, and desserts, so it is easy to put together a full Dominican meal just using these recipes.
All told, this is an excellent way to get acquainted with food from the Dominican Republic; it will inspire anyone who likes to add variety to their meals, and it will tempt readers to visit the country.
