SPAFA's Annual Adoption Expo
Southern Piedmont Adoptive Families, Inc. (SPAFA) is a group that provides support and education to adoptive families and those considering adoption.

SPAFA describes their mission as: “a network of adoptive parents dedicated to increasing adoption awareness, acting as an adoption resource, and offering emotional and educational support throughout the adoption journey.”

One of the unique ways they fulfill this mission every year is through their annual adoption expo. This year is no exception. SPAFA hosting their thirteenth annual Adoption Expo on Saturday, November 7, 2009 a t the International Trade Center in Charlotte, North Carolina.

Every year, adoption professionals and families are on hand to provide you with the information you need. From a professional point of view to a personal point of view, you are privy to a wealth of information.

In addition, the Adoption Expo provides valuable workshops or educational sessions covering many facets of adoption. These are very useful for getting detailed information on specific topics. While the internet is a great source of information, talking with professionals can help sort out what's accurate and what's not.

This year, the Adoption Expo will offer the following workshops:
  • Getting Started on Your Adoption Journey
  • An Overview of Domestic Adoption
  • An Overview of International Adoption
  • Financing your Adoption
  • Foster Care and Adopting an Older Child in the United States
  • Your Child's Health
  • Trans Racial Adoption
  • Adopting as a Single Parent
The hours are 8:30 am to 4:00 pm, with the sessions beginning at 9 am. In addition, Adam Pertman, Executive Director of the Evan B. Donaldson Adoption Institute is the key note speaker. He will speak from 10:15 am to 11:15 am.

There is no charge to attend SPAFA's Adoption Expo. In addition, SPAFA offers hotel and travel information for those attending from out of town.

It's normal to be nervous about attending an adoption conference, especially if you're not sure what to expect. From someone who has attended this event in the past, I can assure you that nothing but helpful and friendly people will be waiting to answer your questions and help you on your adoption journey.
