With God All Things Are Possible

Guest Author - Michelle Pendergrass

All things are possible with God.

Of course all things are possible with God. He created everything. He spoke the earth into existence and created man from the dirt.

When you are down or have problems, look to God and He will help you through any and all problems--also true.

Take it one more step though, our understanding of God is so finite and minuscule that we cannot even begin to understand or comprehend what this means: "with God all things are possible." What is all? All of what we know? All of what all of the books ever penned ever reveals? All of what we, as humans using 10% of our brains, can imagine?

Looking at the Greek for impossible, the meaning is:

1) without strength, impotent, powerless, weakly, disabled

2) unable to be done, impossible

The Greek for possible:

1) able, powerful, mighty, strong

So with man, it things are weak, impotent, powerless, unable to be done, but with God, things are powerful, mighty, strong, able to be done. We do things our way, the results are not worth a sideways glance, but with God, things happen as they should.

Another aspect to look at is the context in which Jesus says this. He's talking about how hard it is for a rich man to enter Heaven and the disciples were "exceeding amazed" and asked who can be saved. That's when Jesus said, "With men this is impossible, but with God all things are possible."

I think it sounds like a dual lesson in forgiveness and understanding. Man lives with conditions.

"I'll forgive her if..."
"When he say I'm sorry, then I'll forgive."
"I'll never forgive her."

Ah. So you can relate? God places no conditions on forgiveness, we just need to come to Him. In Jesus' words, "With men this is impossible, but with God all things are possible."

The lesson in understanding points out that the disciples believed that if you were rich, you were going to heaven. Sounds silly, doesn't it. In today's church I wonder if these sound familiar:

"I've tithed all my life, I'm going to heaven."
"Jesus knows I meant to repent of that."
"I've worked hard for Jesus, I'm sure I'm going to heaven."

Maybe you know of another example? The bottom line is many times, our version of reality is a bit off kilter. Jesus was teaching his disciples that God's ability to save is beyond what we think we know and understand and is impossible for us to ever understand, but with God, all things are possible.
