Biblical Counseling and the DSM IV "In a desperate attempt to relieve pain, reduce symptoms, and assuage the conscience, [we] race right past the Triune God." ~Garrett Higbee Counseling the Heart Christ's model of counseling was person-centered and always focused on heart change not situational change. Counselling Cross-Culturally Cross-cultural counselling occurs whenever the cultural heritage of the counsellor and the client differ. Because culture impacts how we view the world, including values, beliefs, behaviours, and customs, cultural differences must be addressed if biblical counselling is to be effective. Effective Biblical Counseling To discover the key to effective Biblical counseling is a gift to both counselor and counselee. Guarding Against Spiritual Numbness Dorothy Gilman wrote, “If something anticipated arrives too late it finds us numb, wrung out from waiting, and we feel - nothing at all. The best things arrive on time.” Christians should be so sensitive to the needs of other believers that they know the right time to speak God’s Word. When Christmas is Un-Merry Christians who cannot find joy because of past hurts must understand the significance and meaning of the the birth of Christ. Therefore, instead of lifting up the pain of the past, let us discover the "four things we should be lifting up at Christmas" (Guy Lipkins) that will fill us with His joy.
