Louder Than Words

Louder Than Words from HCI Books is a series of teen-authored memoirs. The books Marni, Chelsey and Emily are stories told of the three girls from their view points, not a remembrance of things past but three young girls in the here and now.

As many have found The Diaries of Anne Frank poignant, the same can be said of the stories presented in the Louder Than Words series. Rarely do we find stories of teens written by teens. Usually stories for and about teens are fictional, dramatized bios or stories of famous teen figures such as athletes. However, the Louder Than Words series gives us a glimpse into real teens facing today’s problems.

These real problems may seem uncommon, or to some too common of what life can deal to a teen. Marni suffers from a disorder called trichotillomania, a form of self mutilation where one plucks and pulls out their hair. Emily has West Nile and as the sick one of six siblings watches her brothers and sisters lead a normal life. Chelsey lost both her parents, her mom when Chelsey was six and her dad before she turned 14.

Reading the tales of Marni, Chelsey and Emily is not reserved for teens alone. As a parent the insight is parallel to what we remember as being a teen ourselves, but not what we remember when we are busy parenting. Consider Louder Than Words to be a refresher into the mind of what it is to be a teen. It is a road map to what our teens may be going through today. Are we missing something that our daughter is not telling us? Perhaps reading any of the three stories will help us to formulate the questions we want to ask.

The Louder Than Words book series is brought to us by best-selling author Deborah Reber who also hosts the blog Smart Girls Know. To launch her series with HCI there is an innovative syndication of live video chats with the authors that will air live the week of August 10, 2009 to August 14, 2009 produced by internet publicist Steve O’Keefe.
