Fancy Nancy - Beauty Day Book Review

Fancy Nancy wants to fancy her Mom up for her birthday and decides to treat her mom to a super-deluxe beauty day. A pampering paradise right in their own back yard, but will it be a success?

Fancy Nancy – Ooh La La! It’s a Beauty Day by author and illustrator duo Jane O’Conner and Robin Preiss Glasser

To celebrate Nancy’s mom’s birthday her parents will dine out in a very posh restaurant. Nancy wants to make her mom gorgeous so she plans to treat her mom to an all-expenses-paid afternoon at the Ooh La La! Beauty Spa. All expenses paid means it will be absolutely free.

Nancy transforms her club house into a beauty spa. Here’s a list of what she will provide at this fancy spa: pillows, lots of flower petals, a mirror, lots of colorful towels and washcloths, a footbath (laundry basket), some fancy lotions, fashion magazines, a salon chair and some relaxing music.

Mom enters and Nancy announces “Bonjour, my assistant (little sister) and I are going to pamper you in a fancy, lovely way. Mom sits down in the salon chair and has her hair wrapped up out of the way in a towel. Nancy makes a face mask with a banana and some honey and then applies it to mom’s face. So that mom can relax for ten minutes Nancy plays the recorder - however, the picture in the book clearly shows that mom doesn't find the music soothing or relaxing, but she doesn't want to hurt Nancy's feelings so she just listens.

Next, lotion is rubbed all over mom’s hands and then she is given the choice of ten different nail polishes for her fingertips. She chooses clear which isn’t nearly fancy enough for Nancy’s liking, but she lives by the motto: “your wish is our command” and does the nails in clear polish.

This beauty day spa day ends with the hair style not turning out quite how she imagined it would so she is lucky to be able to have her neighbor, Mrs. DeVine comes over to fix the hairdo and luckily Mrs. DeVine used to be an actual "beauty parlor lady". Her mother is stunned at how beautiful everything turned out and then her parents get to go out for a fancy night on the town compliments of the Ooh La La! Beauty Salon and Fancy Nancy.

Who is Fancy Nancy?
Nancy is a darling little girl who believes that more is always better with it comes to being fancy. She loves to be decked out in a fancy tiara and sparkly shoes and is always looking for the opportunity to teach her family more ways to be fancy. The most endearing characteristic of Fancy Nancy is all the big, fancy words she likes to use. She loves words such as “iridescent”, and “ecstatic” and “extraordinary” and loves French words – but she always explains what the words actually mean so without seeming like a lesson she share the opportunity to learn new and fancy vocabulary words.
