Gifts for Orchid Enthuiasts

Many of us are trying to start our Christmas and holiday shopping early now that we have a bit of breathing room after the summer. Or if you see something here that you can’t live without, you can pass the information on to someone looking for gifts for you!!

Thanks to the readers on the American Orchid Society (AOS) Forum for their help in coming up with many of these ideas. I’ve also come across a lot of new ideas this year that I’d like to share with you. As I find new and interesting vendors, I’ll post follow-up articles. If you do order from any of these vendors, please mention that you saw the link at BellaOnline!

Number One Suggested Gift The number one gift in my mind, and from the forum members, is a membership in the
American Orchid Society. The membership includes a subscription to the monthly award-winning Orchids magazine so your gift will be received not only once, but every month of the year. A two-year subscription comes with a $30 certificate redeemable with a $100 order at a number of orchid plant vendors. If your orchid lover is already a member, a good gift is the binder for the magazines, which holds a year’s worth of the publication and keeps them organized.

The following suggestions are from my research on the web looking for interesting and innovative products. I requested samples from many of these vendors so I could personally vouch for the quality. Where I received a sample, I’ve mentioned what I thought of the product.

Orchid Jewelry
A really interesting jewelry site fonseca Accessories Inc. produces jewelry from specially preserved Dendrobium flowers which are then trimmed in gold. The sample I received with the Dendrobium flower and ferns is stunning. I wore it to my orchid society meeting and it was well received. I recommend this vendor.

Check out The Golden Orchid which has fantastic solid gold or sterling silver earrings, pendants, pins and sculptures. Each creation is an exact reproduction of an actual flower.

Jay Phal, the webmaster of the Internet Orchid Species Photo Encyclopedia, produces wonderful orchid species jewelry sold through Neptune Designs

A great site for solid silver species jewelry is The Elegant Orchid. Tie pins, earrings and pins are available in most cases.

Orchid Clothing
I was rather disappointed in the lack of clothing with orchids on it when searching the web. Here’s a site that really has something different and pretty Milo’s Bali Orchids. He has a number of items for both women and men in a variety of patterns—most with orchids on them! The T-shirt sent as a sample is magnificent and the customer service was excellent. A large orchid is outlined in sequins and has beads all over the lip. When I wore it to my orchid society meeting, everyone wanted to know where to get one!!

Conservation Organization
For the orchid grower who has everything, how about an acre of land in Ecuador through he World Land Trust. Your gift will be saving habitat for endangered orchid species.
