When we accept Jesus Christ as Lord of our life, we begin to receive and experience certain gifts from Him. The Bible describes these gifts as the Fruit of the Spirit.
In Galatians 5:22-23 we are told that the Fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness and self-control.
In the Bible, peace is always tied to Jesus. It never stands on its own.
Isaiah 9:6 calls Jesus the Everlasting Father, the Prince of Peace.
The angels told the shepherds that the Baby in the manger would bring peace to men on whom His favor rests. Luke 2:14
The Bible says that the peace of God, that is beyond all understanding, guards our hearts and minds. Philippians 4:7
I think that as we live day to day, we believers often forget that peace is available to us. It is easy to get caught up in turmoil and to lose sight of the fact that Jesus calms the storms of life. In the Bible, after calming a storm that threatened to swamp the terrified apostlesí boat, He asked them why they were so afraid. Did they still not trust Him? By that time, they had seen many miracles but it seems that they still didnít understand that they were always in His care. Mark 4:35-40
Peace is knowing and trusting that God provides. Ephesians 3:20 tells us that He is able to do more than all we can ever ask or even imagine. How can we fail to trust a God that will provide like that?
To me this is the most treasured gift of the Spirit. I have a quote from the Bible beside my front door. I see it as I leave everyday and as I come home every night.
ďMay the God of hope fill you with all joy and peace as you trust in Him, so that you may overflow with hope by the power of the Holy Spirit.Ē Romans 15:13
God fills us with peace as we trust in Him, and that allows us to overflow with hope. And this is by the power of the Holy Spirit.
This peace is not something that we can strive or search for. It is the super natural peace of God. What is necessary is that we trust Him to take care of it.
To receive this peace, first we make peace with God. Each of us must confess that we sin (that we donít follow Godís commands,) repent (change our ways,) and accept the sacrifice that Jesus made so that we can have peace with God. Knowing that God knows all about our past, has seen the worst, and has forgiven us, makes way for this Fruit of the Spirit; peace that surpasses all understanding.
