Thanks to the readers on the American Orchid Society (AOS) Forum and BellaOnline for their help in coming up with many of these ideas. If you do order from any of these vendors, please mention that you saw the link at BellaOnline!
Calendars, Note Cards, Desk Accessories
Most orchid lovers also enjoy using orchid note cards and stationery; or having a beautiful calendar with different orchids each month.
The American Orchid Society has a wonderful four-color yearly calendar with various orchids as well as a selection of desk accessories, note cards and stationery at its Orchid Emporium site. I highly recommend the calendar with spectacular photographs of a number of different varieties of orchids.
The NY Botanical Garden has an exceptionally nice selection of note cards, journals, engagement calendars and other desktop accessories with orchids. The samples I received are high quality and very decorative. The note cards are in a lovely box which can be used after the cards are finished. I especially recommend the address book which features botanical illustrations by Walter Hood Fitch (1817-1892). For the art lover, check out the Fine Arts Prints section and page down to the Orchid Series.
For botanical art note cards, check out Cynthia Padilla’s homepage. She has some lovely cards based on her art. For the true connoisseur, she can do an individualized portrait of your special plant.
For truly high quality orchid stationery cards, Levenger Orchid Correspondence Cards. These cards offer a unique way to keep in touch with friends in the most attractive way.
The Slipper Orchid Forum has a great selection of calendars, mugs, journals, and much more with slipper orchid themes.
Books, Magazines and References
Along with growing orchids, orchid addicts love books on orchids. Each author will give his or her own twist and expertise to the subject. Check out my section on Book Reviews for some suggestions. As mentioned previously, a membership in the American Orchid Society will include a subscription to Orchids Magazine. Another highly recommended magazine is Orchid Digest; information on subscriptions can be found at Orchid Digest Magazine.
In my research, I found several interesting sites for books. Orchid Books an online bookstore associated with Librairie Pantoute a Quebec City independent bookstore. The site is available in French or English and is dedicated entirely to orchid books with a wonderful selection as well as very good pricing. If you are looking for a specific book, this is the place to go. They also have individual note cards based on original illustrations from The Lindenia encyclopedia. The sample that I received is breathtaking. These would make a great gift for that special person who has everything orchidaceous.
Continuing in an international vein, Koeltz Scientific Books has orchid books in many languages -- Russian, French, Chinese, German -- and of course (mainly) in English. They supply books world wide and accept credit cards. At present they offer nearly 1,000 different orchid books.
For a wonderful selection of gardening and orchid books, go to Timber Press. They publish and distribute a wide variety of great books and their customer service is wonderful. They have several new books out this year on orchids.
