Top Ten Gifts for English Gardeners
Guest Author - Hellie T.

Finding the right gift is always a difficult task so to help here is my selection of gardening gifts that you can give to an English Garden enthusiast.

They should all be readily available in your local garden center and if they are not then ask. Usually staff are only too happy to help and items can be ordered for you.
  • Topiary frames and topiary shears - always a popular gift, every English Garden needs a little topiary!
(If you are feeling generous you could add some box plants/ bay trees/yew trees or standard holly bushes for them to keep in order.
Privet can be used as well, although it will need more regular trimming.

  • A Scarecrow Motion Activated Sprinkler – these are magic and are very useful for keeping animals away from your precious plants without harming them – they use a motion sensor to detect bodies of any kind and if they do, they release a single jet of water – making a whooshing sound.
So the sound combined with the spray make them excellent for keeping animals such as squirrels, rabbits, raccoons, cats, dogs and deer away from your plants.
I have found it a very effective way of keeping my dogs from eating my strawberries this year!
Also they are much loved by small children in the warm weather!

  • A Weather station - will keep you up to date on humidity, air pressure, temperature and set off alarms if the temperature goes below a set point, thus allowing you move or wrap up plants should it get too cold for them.
They can also connect to a computer so you can log the days weather in your English Garden logbook.

  • A Power Blower for removing leaves and other garden rubbish.

  • A padded kneeling cushion or kneeling pads for those tricky jobs where kneeling is essential – look out for the Barber fabric covered ones - as used by Prince Charles.

  • A set of stainless steel trowels.

  • A Tool rack for keeping all those garden tools in order and not spread out all over the shed.

  • A set of garden trugs - there are some lovely ones about from green plastic to woven hazel twigs.

  • A set of Victorian glass Bell Cloches

  • A Barber jacket and a pair of green Hunter wellies for using in the damp and rain.

  • Lastly, and I know this is eleven but how about a spider grabber for humanely removing spiders from the house or potting shed - without having to catch them in your hands!

    Enjoy your English Garden!
