Kids Learn Tolerance

Kids of all ages and abilities need to learn the social skill of tolerance to get along well with others in society.

Tolerance is an attitude that allows us to accept differences from ourselves that we perceive in others: their age, feelings, opinions, ideas, religious beliefs, political positions, appearances, habits, actions and more.

We are living in the large fish bowl of the world; our different perspectives on a given topic allowing many ideas to float in the brine. With the attitude of kindness, peace, and tolerance, ideas promoting the greatest good come to mind. And with a tolerant attitude we see more possibilities to explore.

Kids learn to be tolerant of differences from themselves by seeing the models around them - from seeing adults and other kids being tolerant. Example by example of tolerance in action leads to it becoming the natural way to act.

Being tolerant of others' viewpoints does not mean giving up our own point of view; rather, it is enrichment and leads to greater understanding of ideas and cultural diversity, amongst other topics. On the grander scale tolerance builds bridges to world peace.

While calmly holding our personal point of view we can assess how others see a situation and show respect and tolerance, because each of us is entitled to our personal way of viewing a situation.

We live on a planet full of diverse cultures, while at the same time it is one big home for humanity. Others have developed viewpoints from their life experiences up until now.

Kids first learn tolerance through practicing acceptance with their own family and friends. And gradually through time and experience learn about tolerance with more of the world in its great diversity.

Tolerance is noting differences while remaining peaceful; recognizing that each of us has the right to determine our reality. For our kids and the world, let's be models of tolerance for the great amount of diversity on this planet, our home.
