If you find that you are having difficulty locating employment after being laid-off the problem could be related to how you handle the completion of employment applications. When completing applications it is important to keep in mind that employers typically receive numerous applications for open positions. For positions that are highly sought after it is not uncommon for employers to receive hundreds of responses. In order to make the first cut and receive a call for an interview it is imperative that your application be perfect. That means making sure that nothing is left out.
Always make sure that you follow directions. Itís a good idea to read through the instructions before you begin filling anything out. Youíll stand a much better chance of receiving a call for an interview if you can demonstrate that you are able to follow directions on the application.
If something on the application doesnít apply to you never simply just leave that section blank. Instead write N/A in that section so the employer will know you didnít just overlook it.
Be sure the application is completed neatly and legibly. If for some reason you are concerned about your handwriting go ahead and type it. This gives a very neat and professional appearance. If you do complete the application by hand make sure you use either blue or black ink and never complete it in pencil.
Avoid folding the application, wrinkling it or creasing it. Place it in a large manila envelope with a clasp to be sure it doesnít get wrinkled or dirty before you hand it in.
Before submitting the application review it to make sure you have answered all questions and attached any supporting documentation requested on the application. Also proofread it to make sure there are no mistakes, particularly spelling or grammatical mistakes. In fact, itís a good idea to have someone else look over the application before you submit it to proofread it for you.
You should also be aware that in many cases you may be required to complete an employment application even if you have already submitted a resume and cover letter. Never overlook or ignore this requirement believing your resume will cover everything. This could knock you right out of the running for that job you want. An employerís reasoning for requiring a separate application could vary but typically many employers require an application as well as a resume because certain information is needed that likely wonít be covered by a resume.
Finally, donít forget to sign your application and date it.
