For anyone who experiences headaches or migraines brought on by the smell of cigarette or tobacco smoke, take heart. More and more, states across the country and places around the world are going smoke-free.
Any strong smell or odor, such as smoke, fresh paint, and perfume, can lead to headaches and even trigger migraines. Cigarette and tobacco smoke, unlike most other smells, is often worst because the smoke dissipates slowly and it tends to hang around, which can allow the smell to attach itself to clothing and hair. Smoking and breathing second-hand smoke (as with other chemical smells) can restrict the amount of oxygen to your brain and can irritate nasal passages and sinuses, leading to headaches or migraines.
If smell is a trigger for you, you know that something as simple as going out to dinner or drinks can cause you major pain. However, recent legislation has mandated a smoke-free environment in public places, such as restaurants, in many states allowing patrons to dine without the ill effects of breathing second-hand smoke. Many popular vacation spots throughout the world are also going smoke-free.
Ask friends and loved ones not to smoke around you if you experience headaches or migraines as a result. Better yet, ask them to quit smoking for their own health, and yours—and be supportive of anyone who does. It goes without saying that if you are a smoker and experience headaches, try kicking the habit to improve overall health and reduce the occurrence of headaches.
Patron support of smoke-free restaurants and merchants in your state or local area is very important for upholding the legislation and helping institute it elsewhere. Make an effort to dine out in a smoke-free establishment, knowing at least that cigarette smoke won’t cause you to regret it!

For everyone who resolved to quit smoking and is giving it a solid ‘go’ in the New Year, congratulations and thank you—You can do it!
