Christmas – Savory food gifts – readers’ faves

Guest Author - Susan Alison

Since the first article went online I’ve received several emails from readers telling me of their favourite gift edibles and drinkables. Thank you very much! I’m passing some of them along to the rest of Creativity’s readers.

Cheese Straws

Thank you so much for reminding me of cheese straws, Pam!

Pre-heat oven to 200C/gas mark 6; roll out, on a floured surface, a packet of already-made puff pastry, stir up an egg – brush over the pastry. (A rather nice variation is to add a thin layer of whole grain mustard to the pastry instead of the egg.) Sprinkle generously with a grated cheese of your choice (I’m a Cheddar girl myself) and a shake of black pepper. Squash it all down with a gentle application of your rolling pin. Cut into strips of a suitable length. Either leave as they are, or twist them creatively before placing on a greased baking tray. Drizzle with olive oil. Bake for 20 minutes.

Try not to eat them all before getting them packaged up to give as presents! Or, eat them all and make some more…

People will never guess what they are…

Apricot Stilton

Thank you very much, Nicola, for this one, which is, indeed yummy.

You might prefer it made with white Stilton, but I’ve found this very difficult to obtain.

Soften and beat 125g butter and stir into it 400g crumbled vegetarian Stilton and 40g chopped dried apricots. You can pack this into little dishes or ramekins or jars – whatever suits your gift idea. This will keep in the fridge for a week and will freeze for up to two months. You can add chopped walnuts, if you wish, by pressing them into the top of the cheese to give a nice finish.

Party Mix – what a great idea – thank you very much, Sandy!

Combine 500 ml (= 2 cups) each of puffed wheat, bite-size shredded wheat, mixed salted nuts, garlic-flavor, bite-size bagel chips, (and whatever else you fancy…). Melt a cup of butter in a roasting tray in an oven heated to 250F (130C), mix in 2 tsp Worcestershire sauce and a tsp of garlic salt (and/or onion salt, celery salt, curry powder etc) and then stir in the cereal/nut mix until it’s thoroughly coated. Bake for an hour, stirring every quarter of an hour, and then spread the mix on paper towels to cool. Store in an airtight container. Get ready to give as a gift or use for your own party.

There’ll be some readers’ sweet favourites too, in the next article.

Yours gratefully for your favourites!
