Spotlight on Meg Ryan

Guest Author - Mystic Ransdell

One of the most well-known actresses in the world of romance and comedy is Meg Ryan. The adorable lady was born on November 19, 1961 in Fairfield, Connecticut, with the huge name of Margaret Mary Emily Anne Hyra which she wisely shortened when she entered acting. Ryan is her maternal grandmother's name.

The former journalism major found acting to be a perfect fit. Her big screen debut was in Rich and Famous in 1981, playing Candice Bergen's daughter. (Candice Bergen played her mom again in the 2008 movie The Women.) Meg then landed the role of Betsy Stewart on the soap opera "As The World Turns", a part she played from 1982 to 1984.

Her list of movie roles is long and memorable. Her first big hit was When Harry Met Sally with Billy Crystal. Her scene in the restaurant ("I'll have what she's having.") is one of the most iconic scenes of all time. French Kiss, with Kevin Kline, was touching and hilarious. And who can forget her role in the heartbreaking City of Angels with Nicolas Cage? She has starred
in three movies with her good friend Tom Hanks - Joe Vs. The Volcano, Sleepless in Seattle, and You've Got Mail - and he is executive producer on Ithaca, a film marking Meg Ryan's directorial debut and starring Jack Quaid, her son with Dennis Quaid.

Meg Ryan and Dennis Quaid were married from 1991 to 2001 and she's been romantically linked with Russell Crowe and singer John Mellencamp. In January 2006, she adopted a 14 month old baby girl from China, named Daisy True.

Meg is known for being a strong and determined woman who stands on her own two feet quite well. Despite the perky roles she is known for, this beautiful and talented actress has a backbone of steel and she enjoys challenging herself in much more serious roles, too. Her acting range is quite impressive, even if her romantic comedy roles get the most attention.

Ithaca not only marks her directorial debut, it is the first film Meg Ryan has worked on since starring in The Women in 2008. She decided to take some time to enjoy life, stating that she's been famous since her teen years and it was time to find some balance.

Finding balance is always a good thing, but in Meg Ryan's movies, one of the most wonderful things about her characters is how out of balance and slightly neurotic they often are. The joy is always in discovering who she's going to introduce us to next!
