Non-Monetary Ways to Give Back

Giving to charity isn’t only the province of the affluent. Everyone is able to give something to others, whether it is money, time, or talent. For people who are looking for non-monetary ways to give, there are plenty of options available! Give some of these ideas a whirl.

FreeRice.com is a website that supports itself based on ads on the site. Users are asked to answer vocabulary questions, and each correct answer “earns” 10 grains of rice to be sent to people in economically disadvantaged countries. This site was one of the first websites of its kind and maintains its simplicity more than a decade later.

Donate items that you are unable to use. Sometimes it’s tempting to toss out our things when we no longer need them because it’s simpler, but there are plenty of places to take our gently-used items. Obviously clothing and toys can be donated to shelters and charitable thrift shops, but that’s not all! Stay in touch with a local PTA because they often put out calls for recyclable items, such as toilet paper rolls and cereal boxes. Students use them for science and art projects. Magazines and books can go to free medical clinics or homeless shelters for people to peruse. Hardware supplies in good shape can go to the Habitat Re-Store or to local charitable projects.

Use up any notecards you have lying around by sending them out to folks who may need a “spirit boost.” Perhaps you could send a note of encouragement to your neighbor who is a single mom. Or maybe you want to drop a note in the mailbox of a teacher who has had an impact on your child. Make it a habit to send these little notes to people; you can brighten someone’s day with only a few minutes of your time.

If you are knowledgeable in a certain area, find someone with whom to share your wisdom! You may want to tutor a high schooler in a subject in which you excel, or you may have trade skills that you can teach to someone else to help that person develop a hobby or find a job. Everyone is good at something; find your something and share it!
