We take a look at some of the events that occurred on January 25th.

>Today In …

1890 - The United Mine Workers of America was formed today.

1915 - Alexander Graham Bell initiated the first transcontinental phone call. Bell, who was in New York City, was able to speak to his assistant, Thomas Watson, who was located in San Francisco. The phone hasn’t been the same since!

1924 - The first Winter Olympics began in Chamonix, France.

1961 - The first live presidential news conference is held by John F. Kennedy.

1971 - Charles Manson and three of his accomplices are found guilty in the 1969 murders of Sharon Tate and six others and is sentenced to life in prison.

Sharing A Birthday Today…

Corazon Aquino, former President of the Philippines, was born in 1933.

Robert Burns, the Scottish writer/poet was born in 1759. He penned the infamous “Auld Lang Syne” and “Tam o’ Shanter”.

Etta James, the legendary singer of such tunes as “Stormy Weather” and “At Last” was born in 1938.

Alicia Keys, the singer of “A Woman’s Worth” and the star of “Smokin’ Aces” and “The Nanny Diaries” was born in 1980.

Anita Pallenberg, Italian actress and designer, was born in 1944. She is probably best known for being the girlfriend of Brian Jones and Keith Richards of the Rolling Stones.

George Pickett, a Major General for the Confederate forces during the Civil War, was born in 1825.

Steve Prefontaine, the legendary runner, was born in 1951.

Virginia Woolf, the writer of such novels as “Mrs. Dalloway” was born in 1882.

We Said Goodbye To…

Al Capone, the infamous gangster passed away in 1947 at the age of 48.

Ava Gardner, the legendary actress who appeared in the flicks “Mogambo” and “The Sentinel” passed away in 1990 at the age of 67.
