Japanese Children's Favorite Stories

Guest Author - Taisha Turner

Japanese Children’s Favorite Stories is a compilation of Japanese fairy tales. The editor, Florence Sakade, gathers together tales that delight Japanese children. This beloved collection of myths and legends contains Peach Boy, The Magic Teakettle, The Spider Weaver, The Tongue-cut Sparrow, Mr. Lucky Straw and The Ogre and the Rooster. There is a total of twenty Japanese tales in one book..

Japanese Children’s Favorite Stories has been in publication for the past fifty years. The books are an integral part of libraries worldwide. The illustrations are as beautiful as the stories.

Peach Boy is an old favorite tale that will soon be yours. In the story, Momotaro or Peach Boy comes to a childless old couple. The woman goes to the river to wash clothes. There she finds a golden peach floating in the water. On her husband’s return from work, she shares the peach with him. Just as the man starts to slice the peach, it splits open and there is a child. The tale continues with the child’s adventures.

The Tongue-cut Sparrow is a beautiful Japanese child’s story. It is a tale with a lesson. As in Peach Boy, The Tongue-cut Sparrow starts with an old couple. While the wife in Peach Boy was kind and generous this wife is mean and stingy. This tale tells a child why it is unwise to be mean.

All the tales in Japanese Children’s Favorite Stories are fun to read. Florence Sakade’s collection has fascinated generations of children for the last fifty years and will do the same for many more. Yoshisuke Kurosaki brings the characters to life with his drawings.
