Here is a very easy project for kids of many levels and abilities to try, including those with learning and physical challenges and disabilities.
A bit of background on the bookmark first, though: This is a Korean Fir Tree and when mature will grow to 3 meters or about 10 feet tall. It has beautiful, almost white pine cones that sit upright on the branches. The underside of the needles is almost white, also. The needles have a light bluish hue rather than a bright green like other varieties of pine and cedar trees.
This is a good tree for a small city garden since it doesn't take a lot of width when mature. I think it is one of nature's perfect examples of a Christmas tree. And I am lucky enough to have it in my back garden here in Holland, where we are just north of the 52nd line of latitude, and about 900 miles south of the Arctic Circle.
To use, just print this page as many times as needed for multiple bookmarks and have the kids carefully cut out the bookmarks around the outside edges.
Or, print them out using the printer friendly button at the foot of the page, and then do the cutting out. Be sure that kids are using blunt tip scissors so there are no accidents and if they are struggling, help them out. I think holiday projects should be fun and not just for academic purposes. After all, it is important to feel joy while learning so kids will want to keep learning!
You could also laminate the image after cutting it out and then you'll have a much longer lasting bookmark. The bookmark is 200 pixels wide and 800 pixels long, which translates to 2 inches by 8 inches.
If you have a printer that can accept cardstock or construction paper, that will make a sturdy bookmark to use time and again. And when your bookmark wears out just print out another copy. Of course, bookmarks look best using a color printer, either ink jet or laser printer.
