SF Gate

SF Gate
SF Gate is an online variant of The San Francisco Chronicle. It is considered the number one newspaper site in California. This online magazine is owned by Hearst Newspapers and boasts having "8.1 million unique visitors per month". The website features all the news you would expect from a paper including many headings and subheadings to cover different interests.

The main sections include commentary and news on sports, business, entertainment, food/dining and travel. The subsections have opinion pieces, technology, crime, and small business news. There is regional information on traffic, wine, skiing, earthquakes, education and other public information. A traditional entertainment section offers news on dining, wine, movies, nightlife, art, books, TV, radio and performances. Under living there is news on being green, the gay and lesbian community, horoscopes, health and style. As well as all this (and more headings not mentioned) you can read the latest edition of the San Francisco Chronicle.

If you like polls they have a section where you can participate in their latest polls on topics like minimum wages, oil spills, politics, health and safety. It's easy to vote and you can see the results before you do. Keep in mind, if you have a pop-up blocker it may prevent the poll box from opening.

The book section has lots of reviews, a listing of readings and signings in the Bay area, featured articles on the hottest authors and of a course a simple bestsellers list that is updated every Tuesday through a telephone survey done with booksellers. The list is divided into 3 sections: fiction, non-fiction and paperbacks. Each section has ten books listed. The listing shows a basic comparison of current week, previous week and how many weeks on list.

The website is laced with RSS feeds so you can tap in with your reader to get the latest updates. The SF Gate isn't only for Bay area residents; although much of the information is directly related it provides some good reading fodder and is worth checking out.
