You Don’t Need a Title to Be a Leader by Mark Sanborn a Book Review
Author Mark Sanborn once again gets to the heart of the matter in his book “You Don’t Need a TITLE to be a Leader.” Stories and principles based of the lives of everyday people deliver the message of how leadership…good leadership can impact an organization, a life, a community.
“When you do your job—any job—with initiative and determination to make a positive difference, you become a leader.” Such a simple statement, humble, not a lot of fanfare but without a doubt true. Take a look around your own life. Who are the people who make the greatest impact? It seems the ones who give, serve, love and unselfishly are the ones others will follow willingly. No questions asked, no accolades required.
Sandborn introduces six principles of leadership:
1. The Power of Self-Mastery
2. The Power of Focus
3. The Power with People
4. The Power of Persuasive Communication
5. The Power of Execution
6. The Power of Giving
Now perhaps some of us may have created a list that looks like this:
1. The Power of Me First
2. The Power of Step on the Little Guy (or any guy for that matter)
3. The Power of Carelessness
4. The Power of Being a Bully
5. The Power of Making Them Figure out What to Do
6. The Power of Intimidation
7. And…the Power of Taking.
Sounds funny, but many actually use the tactics on the second list. The principles on Sandborns list allow for growth, passion, compassion and over-all success to organizations AND individuals. In this day and age you need more than just "good-enough" leadership. There is a divide and it is marked by those who do just enough and those who blow the concept of "good-enough" out of the water. Leadership is not a random act. It is a deliberate focus.
