Ohio : State History Dates

We take a look at some of the important dates in history for the great state of Ohio.

October 7, 1763 - The Royal Proclamation advised on settlement in the Ohio Valley.

July 13, 1787 - Ohio became part of the Northwest Territory when the Northwest Ordinance was ratified.

August 3, 1795 - The Northwest Indian War came to an end when the Treaty of Greenville was signed.

April 7, 1788 - The first permanent settlement in Ohio was founded. The name of the site? Marietta

April 30, 1802 - Ohio’s state government was given authorization to form by Congress.

February 19, 1803 - President Thomas Jefferson approved Ohio’s constitution.

March 1, 1803 - This is the date recognized as Ohio officially becoming the 17th state.

February 18, 1804 - Ohio’s first university, Ohio University, was founded.

December 23, 1814 - Cleveland, Ohio was incorporated.

April 27, 1822 - Civil War General and future 18th U.S. President, Ulysses S. Grant was born in Ohio.

October 4, 1822 - Civil War hero and future 19th U.S. President, Rutherford B. Hayes, was born in Ohio.

August 3, 1827 - The first boat began its journey on the Ohio and Erie Canal.

November 19, 1831 - James A. Garfield, the future 20th President of the United States, was born in Ohio.

August 20, 1833 - Benjamin Harrison, grandson of William Henry Harrison and 23rd U.S. President, was born in Ohio.

April 26, 1835 - The Battle of Phillips Corners occurred which was part of the Toledo War which resulted in a boundary dispute between Ohio and Michigan.

March 4, 1841 - Although born in Virginia, William Henry Harrison settled in Ohio. On this day Harrison was inaugurated the 9th U.S. President. He would succumb to pneumonia a month later.

June 17, 1851 - Voters approved Ohio’s current state constitution.

January 7, 1857 - Ohio’s statehouse, located in Columbus, officially opened.

September 15, 1857 - William Howard Taft, the 27th President and later Chief Justice of the Supreme Court, was born in Ohio.

July 19, 1863 - The Battle of Buffington Island, the major battle to be fought in Ohio during the Civil War, took place today.

November 4, 1865 - Warren G. Harding, the 29th President of the U.S., was born in Ohio.

August 19, 1871 - Orville Wright was born in Ohio. Wright who lived in Dayton would travel to Kitty Hawk, North Carolina with his brother Wilbur (who was born in Indiana) and become the first two people to fly on December 17, 1903.

March 4, 1877 - Garrett Morgan was born. This Ohio native was credited with inventing the device known as the traffic light!

June 26, 1910 - Roy J. Plunkett was born. On April 6, 1938, Plunkett accidentally discovered the wonders of Teflon!

March 21, 1913 - Today began the events that would result in the Great Dayton Flood, one of the worst disasters in Ohio history.

July 18, 1921 - John Glenn was born in Ohio. Glenn who was the first astronaut to orbit the Earth on February 20th, 1962 would later become one of Ohio’s Senators.

August 5, 1930 - Neil Armstrong was born in Ohio. Armstrong became the first man to step on the moon on July 20, 1969.

August 7, 1953 - President Eisenhower signed the resolution allowing Ohio’s statehood to retroactively take effect March 1, 1803.

September 7, 1963 - The Pro Football Hall of Fame opened in Canton, Ohio.

May 4, 1970 - The infamous incident at Kent State University occurred today. Four people were killed during a Vietnam War protest during an altercation with the National Guard.

June 7, 1993 - The groundbreaking began on the Rock ‘N’ Roll Hall of Fame in Cleveland, Ohio. The museum would officially open on September 2, 1995.
