Study Tips

Guest Author - C.S. Bezas

Here are some great study tips as you prepare for your exams!
  1. Pick a Spot. Talk to any expert and they will tell you that you'll get better grades if you study in the same place every day. For some reason, when you consistently sit down at a chosen study place, your mind is more willing to study rather than day dream. So think hard where a peaceful place might be for you, whether at home or at school or at the library. For effective studying, pick a spot and stick with it!

  2. Pick a Time. Another suggestion that many study experts will give is to pick a consistent time of day for studying. Whether it's the first thing you do after coming home or a different time, it doesn't matter. What does matter is that it's pretty close to the same time every day. Being regular like this again helps your mind be ready to study instead of daydreaming or procrastinating. For effective studying, pick a time and stick with it.

  3. Ignore Interruptions. Even if your little brother keeps banging on the door, eventually he'll quit if he sees he's not getting any where. Just know that if you are insistent on "protecting" your study time (and therefore your grades), eventually people will begin to see that you're serious about your studies. They'll begin to respect you for that and you'll be making your future full of possibilities! For effective studying, ignore interruptions (except if an emergency, of course).

  4. Keep Study Supplies Well-Stocked. How frustrating would it be if every time you wanted to study, you couldn't find a pencil? Or the lightbulb was burned out at your desk? Here's a simple tip: once a week, do an inventory of everything that makes your studying easy and nice. Whether it's making sure you have a nice supply of lightbulbs (for good lighting) to sharpened pencils, taking care of this NOT during your scheduled study time will make sure your actual study time is effective...and even fun! Therefore, for effective studying, keep study supplies well-stocked.

  5. Reward Yourself. Make a chart out of graph paper. Decide how many days in a row you'll study. At the end of the column, create a big square and draw a picture of what will be your reward when you actually finish the days you promised yourself. Then make sure you follow through with your reward. It's important to reward yourself for your good work.
Just a few little steps and studying will soon bring its own rewards!
