All About Abbott House

All About Abbott House
Abbott House is an amazing social services agency located in Westchester, New York, with offices in the Bronx, and Dutchess and Orange counties. They provide support to abused, neglected and abandoned children. They offer a wide variety of services for children, families and potential adoptive families.

Foster Care Homes and Services

Abbot House goes above and beyond the call of duty by providing specialized foster care support services and homes. Recognizing that the needs of children in foster care greatly differ among children, they offer the following types of foster help:
  1. Foster Boarding Homes

  2. Kinship Foster Care

  3. Respite and Educational Support Services for children in care

  4. Preparing youth for adulthood

  5. Mentoring

  6. Therapeutic Foster Boarding Homes

  7. Group Homes

  8. Residential Treatment Center

  9. Diagnostic Reception Center

Adoption services are yet another area where Abbot House is making the difference in the lives of children and families. They offer adoption and post adoption services, and adoption workshops for those interested in adoption (and for those who have adopted).

Abbott House also offers special programs to help children in their care. These include:

Youth Retreat Program

The Youth Retreat Program gives children the chance to experience a special retreat during the holidays, filled with fun activities and a holiday meal.

Mentor Program

Abbott House’s Mentor Program pairs an adult mentor with an at-risk child. The purpose is to help develop a meaningful relationship between the child and the adult.

Family Bridge Program

The Family Bridge Program helps older children learn what it’s like to be a part of a family, and helps families know what it’s like to adopt an older child. Described on their website as a “test drive,” this program is unique in the preparation it offers both children and potential parents.

My Bag

Children that come to Abbott House may not arrive with their own luggage, clothes or toys. Therefore, Abbott House provides a bag containing special items for the child, including toiletries, pajamas, books, stuffed animals, coloring books and crayons, just to name a few. Volunteers may donate items for this special service.

Developmentally Disabled Children and Adults

Abbot House also offers support services to developmentally disabled adults and children. These programs include:
  • Individual Residences and Programs for OMRDD

  • Day Habilitation Services

  • Self-Advocacy

  • Recreational Programs

  • Adoption Programs
