Countdown till Back-to-School
Guest Author - C.S. Bezas

Quick. How many days left until school starts again? Any ideas? For some, school is right around the corner. For others, due to their school schedule, there are still weeks left.

No matter the time remaining, there is still much fun to be had. Here are a few ideas of how to enjoy the time you have left until school starts up again.

Family Time.
Like it or not, family really is an important thing in life. It has always amazed me how much airports and funerals have in common. No where else do you see so much hugging!

So rather than wait for a funeral to show love to your family, why not start now. Spend some time with somebody in your family today. Some ideas are:
    • * Surprise a Family Member.
      Surprise somebody by knocking on their bedroom door and asking if you can come in. When they ask why, simply say that you were missing them. If things go well, then you could even ask if you could just sit in their room and be with them. Don't plan on more than five minutes for the visit - because they might not be able to handle the shock! But it will bring a great feeling into the family.

      (And know that if they say, "No, don't come in," it's just because they're not used to the attention. You can always try again next week!)
      * Serve a Family Member.
      Serve somebody in the family by watching for a time you can help them. Then, when they least expect it, make their bed or serve them breakfast in bed. The surprise might freak them out, but hey, the kind deed just might come back to you some day!
      * Slip a Family Member.
      The next time your brother or sister least expects it, why not slip them a $1 bill. When they ask why, simply smile and say, "Just cuz I love you."

  • Summary.
    Just a few weeks back my son got hit by a car while riding his bike. Just think of the thoughts going through my mind when I got the phone call from somebody in the neighborhood: "Your son has been hit by a car. The paramedics are working on him now. You might want to come down to the corner."

    Through the grace of God, my son is now ok. But the point is - Families are important. And rather than wait until a funeral (or an airport) to show the love, why not start today? You never know when the last time you'll see them will be. So take these last few days or weeks until school starts up again and fill them with lots and lots of family "Surprising," Serving," and "Slipping." You'll be glad you did!
