Holiday Leaf Bookmark Project

Here is a project for kids of many levels and abilities to try, including those with learning and physical challenges and disabilities - an adult or older child can assist as necessary.

A bit of background on the bookmark first, though: The pictures on the bookmark are actually pressed leaves that have been laid out on heavy white paper and then scanned as digital images. I collected these leaves during a trip to Finland - a country that has a wide variety of trees, some of them very tall. They were collected during the month of September.

As you can see in the lower image I've combined a piece of bark in the picture. Quite separately from this project let this bookmark be an example of creative and fun work that develops small motor development. Most classrooms or schools have a computer room with scanning equipment that could be used for the student projects.

To use, just print this page as many times as needed for multiple bookmarks and have the kids carefully cut out the bookmarks around the outside edges.

Or, print them out using the printer friendly button at the foot of the page, and then do the cutting out. Be sure that kids are using blunt tip scissors so there are no accidents and if they are struggling, help them out. I think holiday projects should be fun and not just for academic purposes. After all, it is important to feel joy while learning so kids will want to keep learning!

You could also laminate the image after cutting it out and then you'll have a much longer lasting bookmark. The bookmark is 200 pixels wide and 800 pixels long, which translates to 2 inches by 8 inches.

If you have a printer that can accept cardstock or construction paper, that will make a sturdy bookmark to use time and again. And when your bookmark wears out just print another copy. Of course, bookmarks look best using a color printer, either ink jet or laser printer.
