Candles Around the Home

Guest Author - Robin Rounds Whittemore

Chances are you have one or more candles in your home. Of those candles, how many are scented? Do you combine scents all in one room, or do you arrange scents by the type of room that the candles are in? Do you enhance your room’s atmosphere by placing candles in it according to the activity that will be taking place?

The dining room is one room where unscented candles are best. Scented candles could interfere with the enjoyment and taste of food. Suppose everyone gathered for a party and you served birthday cake. A birthday cake scented candle might be too much to take on. You and your guests may like it. Individual tastes matter the most here.

Below is an assortment of different rooms in the house and suggestions for some scents that would go well. This by no means restricts you from enjoying any scent anywhere in your home. These are just some ideas to enhance fragrance in your home.

In the kitchen, food scents in candles combine beautifully with this atmosphere. Some scents could include brown sugar, cinnamon, and fruits. Baking lines that include gingerbread and chocolate are popular as well. Apple scents, as well as apple pie fragrances rate very well with many people. Many gourmet candles include coffee and mocha. If you were to burn an apple and a cinnamon candle together in the kitchen when you have friends over for informal coffee and a chat, it could create a more warm and cozy place.

Now, imagine taking a nice warm bath. You are looking forward to relaxing in a nice, warm tub filled with suds. To top it off, you have a copy of a book you have wanted to read. Now, you need to decide what candle you want to burn. Will it be vanilla, eucalyptus, or even a peppermint scent? How about sandalwood or patchouli scented? Perhaps here is where you would like to place a floral scent such as lilac or rose.

In the bedroom would you consider a candle with a lavender scent or even chamomile? Remember never to leave a candle burning unattended, and being asleep is having a candle unattended. Also, do not use a candle for a night light. It is best to have the candle burning while you are getting into your bedtime attire. Leave it on while you read in bed if you’d like. When you feel yourself start to get drowsy, be sure to extinguish the candle before you go to sleep.

When it comes to the living room, consider a floral candle. Sandalwood or even patchouli would work as well. It depends on the atmosphere you are trying to create. Is it a romantic evening in front of the fire or an energetic evening with friends over for game night?

If your home is more rustic, a pine scented candle would work in the living area. Pine lends itself to an outdoorsy feel. Other woodsy scents would also enhance a rustic or log cabin style.

For any home office or den, the scent should reflect the personality of the person that spends the most time there. This may be the place to get the most creative depending on what the room is used for. Is it used for relaxing or working? Do you need to get energized, or have a place to escape?

To sum it up, any fragranced candle that you like will always have a place in your home. A candle and the scent, or scents, you choose will also help add to the decor and atmosphere.
