Afterlife Visitations

Guest Author - Deanna Joseph

In a world where most everything can be explained scientifically, the journey into the afterlife is probably the single greatest mystery of the human race. We have both our doubts and beliefs, but sometimes even a strong belief system is not enough to comfort us when we have experienced the loss of a loved one.

Fortunately, our ancestors believed that contact with deceased loved ones was possible, even probable. It was not uncommon to leave offerings of food in return for guidance from an ancestor. It is even said that on certain days of the year, May day and Samhain, or Hallow's Eve, contact with the dead is very likely and that it's very important to honor those who have passed. And it was the responsibility of the village medicine man or wise woman to help to appease the angry spirits and help the recently departed spirits to move on.

Luckily for us we don't have to wait for Hallows Eve, nor enlist the help of a wise woman to hear from those who have passed. There are ways in which our deceased loved ones can contact us, if we are willing to keep an open mind.

One of the easiest ways in which spirits can make contact with us is through our dreams. Dreams are safe, and visits from the deceased won't frighten us as much as having them appear as a full body apparition in our bedroom at night. When we are dreaming, our conscious mind takes a back seat so visitors from the afterlife can more easily communicate with us.

Afterlife encounters can also take place when we are awake; we just may not be as aware of them. Movement out of the corner of our eye, or a flickering light or computer screen can be signs of a spirit encounter.

Sometimes, for no reason, thoughts of a deceased loved one may pop into our head and this could be them trying to communicate with us telepathically. Keep in mind that the deceased are purely energy, and they can manipulate energy in a variety of ways. As energy, they are more easily able to enter into our own thoughts, so they are capable of communicating with us psychically.

When a spirit communicates with us telepathically they are sending messages into our own imagination, so we will most likely hear them the same way we hear our own thought processes. This may be confusing for us at first, but as we learn to pay attention we can learn what thoughts are our own, and which are popping in from our loved ones.

One of the most important things for us to keep in mind is that the dead don't want to frighten us, but provide us with comfort and peace. They will choose to communicate with us in ways that are gentle and loving, and be much more subtle in nature than full blown hauntings. If we have any encounters that do scare us, it is very likely that these are not our loved ones, and we can demand that they leave.

Spirit communication has been documented in just about every culture for thousands of years. Our deceased loved ones want to keep in touch and let us know they are alright, but more importantly, they want us to know that we are alright too.
