Irene Smalls is an excellent writer of children’s books concerning African-American family relationships. Her picture books are Jonathan and His Mommy, Kevin and His Dad, Because You Are Lucky, My Pop Pop and Me and My Nana and Me, Ms. Smalls writes about the special relationships between Black-American family members.
Kevin and Jonathan are cousins. Johnthan moves in with Kevin's family in Because You Are Lucky. At first, the two cousins do not get along. Jonathan gets good grades and has a mother. Kevin does not, but as time goes by the cousins discover common interests. In the end, they develop a strong relationship based on them.
In My Pop Pop and Me, a little boy and grandpapa spend the day together. Grandpa and grandson bake a lemon cake. Their love for each other is shown by their smiles as they interact. The picture book makes a great Father's Day Book or Grandparents Day Book.
Ms. Smalls uses simple rhyming sentences to tell the story of My Nana and Me. Rhythmic text is like that in the before mentioned book. Children love the rhyming words. Kids between four and eight-year-old can either read it or follow easily the picture book’s story. My Nana and Me has twenty-four pages.
My Nana and Me tells about the relationship with her grandmother. Irene Smalls writes it from the little girl’s point of view. It should be a part of all grandparents’ special children library. It is a fact, children who build strong, loving bonds when young grow into self-confident adults. Irene Smalls gets an A+ for another picture book about African-American family relationships. The adventure book is great for Mother’s Day or Grandparents Day. Purchase or borrow a copy and curl up with that special little girl.
Irene Smalls' Black Kids Books are great Kwanzaa books. People give books as Zawadi gifts. The books tend to be inspirational and educational. They are books by or about Africa or African-Americans.
Grandson and grandfather share a special day in My Pop Pop and Me.
