Here is a kinesthetic lesson for learning about the quantity of 12 and sets of 4.

Age: 1st through 3rd grade and older learning disabled students.

For: Teachers for the benefit of students.

Skills learned: Quantity of 12, set of 4, counting to 12, counting by 4s to 12.

Introduction: If working in the regular classroom, clear floor space for students to move across the room. Ideally, divide the class into groups of 12 students, but any other even number of students will work for this lesson by varying the number of sets.

One group of 12 students will be active and the remaining students will watch and then take a turn next.

1. Working with the first group of 12 students, give each a number from 1 to 12 to remember.

2. Have the students line up across the front of the room in order of 1 to 12 and beginning at 1 each say their number out loud one at a time. Then have students repeat counting 1 to 12 and this time have the students that are sitting out join in the counting 1 to 12. This procedure can be repeated as often as you choose.

3. Still working with the 12 students make 3 sets of 4 with the students by having 1, 2, 3 and 4 join hands; 5, 6, 7 and 8 join hands; and 9, 10, 11 and 12 join hands.

4. Tell the class that the students with partners have made a set of 4.

5. Ask the class to count the number of sets - answer should be 3.

6. Have the 12 students line up across the room still holding hands with their partners, so that you still have 3 sets of 4 students each.

7. Teacher walks along the line and points to each set saying 4, 8, 12.

8. Now the teacher repeats the walk and all students say 4, 8, 12.

9. Repeat this game as often as needed.

This game benefits your 3 main kinds of learners: visual, auditory and kinesthetic: The visual learners see the groups of 4. The auditory learners hear the counting. The kinesthetic learners experience the movements and being part of a set of 4.
