An Overview of Fragrance

Guest Author - Robin Rounds Whittemore

What is exactly is fragrance? Defined by the dictionary in simple terms, fragrance is a sweet or pleasant odor. The thesaurus says that words like fragrance are aroma, bouquet, perfume, and scent.

Fragrance comes in all types of scents and packaging. We have much from which to choose, solids, liquids, incense, perfumes, sprays, reed diffusers, candles, soaps, etc. Sometimes the choices can be overwhelming, but once you know what you like, and what you don’t, the choices do get easier.

We have fragrances that make people smell better, or more attractive. There are fragrances that help mask bad odors. Sometimes, just to relax, we will surround ourselves with certain scents to help change our mood.

Fragrances are different and they do not smell the same to everyone. Have you ever picked up a certain candle and inhaled a pleasant scent? You then handed that candle to your friend and she turned up her nose? The previous scenario does not mean the scent of the candle was bad. It merely implied that the friend did not care for the fragrance, or aroma, that the candle gave off.

Aromatherapy is the use of fragrant oils extracted from herbs, flowers and fruits. More broadly it is the use of aroma to enhance a feeling of well-being.

Thinking back, certain aromas can bring good memories. There might be the aroma of a cake as it is baking, the scent of popcorn in a movie theater, or the bouquet of flowers that were delivered to your desk.

The smell of certain perfumes, if applied right, can be one of the most intoxicating experiences you can have. While there are some perfumes that you revel in, there are also those that do not agree with you.

Perfumes, if too overpowering, can also turn you off, no matter how much you enjoy the fragrance. While dining in a restaurant, a waitress that wears too much perfume can help distract from an otherwise pleasant meal.

Perfumes can also differ from person to person. While one perfume may smell great on you, it may be disaster for a friend. It doesn’t mean that it is not a good fragrance; it is just that your friend has different body chemistry than you.

Some people wear only certain scents and almost will not believe that other perfumes are even made. Others also change perfumes depending on the time of year, or what clothes they are wearing, or even what mood they are in.

Fragrance is yours to play with. Start exploring the different scents around you. Find the ones that you like, and even the ones you don’t like. Experiment a little and have fun!
