How to Hear God

Guest Author - Preena Deepak

Christianity is more about a relationship with God than a religion with strict rules. As in the case of any relationship, communication is vital in a Christian believerís walk with God. When believers talk to God in prayer, He listens and answers. In the same way God desires to talk to His children and see them respond.

The Bible testifies to the fact that God speaks to people. Even in the Garden of Eden, God chose to have a daily chat with Adam and Eve. It was Godís call that made Abraham forsake his home and roam around the countryside like a nomad. Beyond a doubt, God does speak to His children. He chooses to communicate His love, His power, His deliverance and His purpose for His own and so God speaks.

In a world that is filled with communication problems and misunderstandings merely because people fail to listen to each other, hearing God seems to be a challenge. To accentuate this, lack of time, preoccupation and a chaotic lifestyle squeeze out the desire to hear God. This is a very dangerous situation as the one who ceases to hear God or has never heard God heads towards spiritual destruction.

Does God speak to only a few and not all? God desires to speak and be heard by all His children. There are no exceptions, no exclusions. However, only those who earnestly seek to hear Him and obey His word can and will discern His voice. Hearing God and obedience go hand in hand. In the earlier example, Abraham obeyed as soon as he heard God speak. Anyone who is a mere hearer and not a doer will soon cease to hear God and fall out from His grace. Do not merely listen to the word, and so deceive yourselves. Do what it says. James 1:22 (NIV)

Now that we know that God does speak to His children, the question that arises is ĎHow to hear God?í.

The Bible
God speaks through His Word, the Bible. This inspired word of God has remained flawless and is the main medium to hear God speak. No matter what your situation is, no matter how you feel, there is always help, support and guidance in the Bible and God directs His childrenís attention to the most appropriate passages and so speaks through His word. A casual reading of the Bible can never help anyone hear God. But the one who earnestly seeks to hear God and devotes time and attention to Bible reading and meditation will find pearls of wisdom, strength and comfort.

Memorizing Scripture
Going a step beyond reading and meditating Bible passages and memorizing scripture verses is another way to hear God. The Psalmist says, ďI have hidden your word in my heart that I might not sin against you.Ē Ps 119:11 (NIV) Memorizing scripture helps hear God even when there is no access to the Bible. Many believers living under persecution with no Bible for ready reference hear God only through passages they memorized.

In Quiet Moments
God speaks through quiet moments. During those times when a believer chooses to tune off the world and wait at the Lordís feet in silent expectation, pondering on Godís magnificence, God speaks. Some hear His audible voice and others experience His presence and peace as an answer to their needs. Quiet moments are times of worship and times to hear God.

From Fellow Believers
Though God speaks directly to each of His children, there are times when others in the faith are used to communicate His will. Most often God speaks to a believer through others so as to confirm His leading. Hearing God entirely from other believers is certainly not to be practiced by anyone.

Christian Literature, Songs, Poems
There are many instances when Godís children hear His voice through Christian literature, music and poems. These like promptings from fellow believers are often Godís confirmations and reassurances of what He speaks through His word.

There is no end to Godís creativity in reaching out to people. He once used a donkey to speak to the erring Prophet Baalam and a burning bush to recruit Moses to lead the Israelites out of bondage. God can and does speak through any circumstance, person or material. There can be no set formula to hear God. Those who earnestly seeks after God and His will in total obedience and surrender will never fail to hear God.
