This is a very easy project for kids of varied abilities to try with help from an adult or older child, especially when using scissors.

A bit of background on the bookmark first, though. The little bird, called a Koolmees, can actually beat its wings so fast that it remains stationary in the air while pulling the seeds from the blossom. These birds live all over western Europe. The bloom featured in the bookmark is a sunflower. This large 6 inch (15cm) diameter blossom was in our backyard here on the coast along the North Sea in Holland.

To use the bookmark, print this page as many times as needed for multiple copies, and have the kids carefully cut around the outside edges.

Or, print them out using the printer friendly button at the foot of the page, and then do the cutting out. Be sure that kids are using blunt tip scissors so there are no accidents and if they are struggling, help them out.

You could also laminate the image after cutting it out and then you'll have a much longer lasting bookmark. Each of the bookmarks from our Learning Disabilities Library of Bookmarks is 200 pixels wide and 800 pixels long, which translates to 2 inches by 8 inches.

If you have a printer that can accept cardstock or construction paper, that will make a sturdy bookmark to use time and again. And when your bookmark wears out just print out another copy.

Of course, they will look best using a color printer, either ink jet or laser printer.
