Thoughts on 'Orphan' Movie

Guest Author - Brandii Lacey

The reality of adoption and the portrayal of adoption in the media have not always been on the same page. Some television shows and movies will accurately portray adoption, and sadly, others will portray a picture far from the truth.

The movie Orphan has caused quiet a controversy within the adoption community and beyond. According to the previews, Orphan focuses on the adoption of an older child from an orphanage, and the heartbreaking and cruel events that follow.

Some people have been outraged due to the negative and misleading stereotypes this horror movie portrays. There are already many untrue stereotypes when it comes to adopting an older child. While some people can accept this movie for simply “another horror movie”, others have strong feelings that this movie doesn't even come close to accurately portraying adoption.

In fairness, this is not an adoption movie. Or is it? The movie is titled Orphan, and many of the trailers have led people to believe that it's about about a child who commits unthinkable crimes against her adoptive family. Regardless of any twists the movie may contain, it clearly advertises the "horrors" of an older child adoption.

Dr. Jane Aronson is an internationally renowned pediatrician who has treated over 10,000 children. She is also the founder and CEO of Worldwide Orphans Foundation (WWO). The purpose of this foundation is to transform the lives of orphaned children. Worldwide Orphans Foundation has established humanitarian projects in the following countries: Azerbaijan, Bulgaria, China, Ecuador, Ethiopia, Kenya, Serbia and Vietnam.

Dr. Aronson has this to say about the movie Orphan:

“Some may say 'Relax, it's just a silly horror flick, why be so politically correct?' But untold pain continues to be inflicted upon adopted children who see the trailer depicting an orphan as a monstrous, vindictive child. While that may not mean anything to some, for those of us who work with orphans, adopt them, and care for them, it in unacceptable, hurtful, and simply intolerable.”
